Piece and Quilt with Precuts by Christa Waston

Welcome to the fourth week of the blog hop!   I am joining Kristin and Hollyanne for a 5 week journey in exploring the book by Christa Watson Piece and Quilt with Precuts . Be sure to get your copy here  or Amazon carries the book as well. I am journaling about making my version of Gridwork from the book and I will show my progress each week. The quilt is on a journey, too, from Northern Michigan to a booth at the International Quilt Market and Show in Huston, in November!  I hope to have it all finished by the end of the hop! I am making my quilt from Christa’s fabric that will be available in November. It is called Modern Marks by Benartex. Click on the link to see all of the collection. It is so gorgeous! Ask for it at your local quilt shop. This week is also the opportunity where we are  having a Giveaway for a chance to win an electronic version of the book AND for US only shipping a stack of 5 inch squares that I have left from my scraps of Modern Marks fabric! Details on entering later in the post.

This week I really thought long and hard over thread choices and fmq motifs on the quilt as I loaded it on my long arm frame. I chose a grey color  #504 from Superior threads So Fine! thread line. I also looked over  quilts I have in my studio for stitching inspiration. Since this quilt is going to be a sample at QUILT MARKET for Christa I wanted it to be a little more special but not have the quilting overwhelm the fabric line. Because the quilts purpose must be considered when choosing the stitching. I wanted  to enhance her wonderful pattern and the fabric.

I want to give a shout out to Hobbs batting for your wonderful wool blend product. I asked them what would be the best batting for a quilt to be in a show or a sample in a booth. They recommended this wool/cotton blend. It doesn’t “remember” creases when you fold it to ship and it has a little bit of loft. Also another tip, that I knew but Hobbs also shared  with me, is to double batt. YES, layer TWO battings in the middle of your quilt. You have to remember the purpose of your quilt. This quilt is to be a show piece , a sample , something to  really show that textured quilting.  It has nice loft and a good  hand already. It’s not even off the frame!   It will be super snuggly, soft and warm, when it is retired and ready to be used in my home on a 40 below zero winter’s day.

More about how I did these stitches next week. Click on my Face for detail pictures of the qulit in the album!

I am working on my variation of Gridwork. I love to do some changes to a pattern to make the quilt my own. My version is inspired and my ideas are to expand upon what the pattern maker made. There are two things I wanted to try after I made the quilt exactly as Christa did in her pattern. First,  I like making mini block to mix in when you have a one block quilt. So I made some half sized.

I am going to play with several ideas over this next week with the mini blocks. Should I keep 4 little ones in a 4 patch and mix with the full sized blocks? I also want to play with more negative space and maybe some places where there is no piecing. I like the look of a more Random element to the layout. I also want to mix this whole thing up with solids and solid reading fabric to give the eyes some place to rest and me to do what I love. FREE MOTION QUILT.

Oh, I just made a Gridwork block with a mini gridwork in the smaller space, really liking this!!! You know where I am going with this, I do believe!

Ok now for the details of the Giveaway.

  3. I love the quilting you did on the show sample. It’s very much in keeping with the fabric line’s aesthetic. I also like how you’re making the pattern again but tweaking it to your own ideas / tastes this time. So often I look at a pattern and think, “if only it didn’t have that element” or “I would do it this way…” but I feel like I’m insulting the artist’s work by wanting to change things about it. I’m glad that I’m not the only one that thinks that way. I guess that’s what creativity’s about – finding a way to express your own voice. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the giveaway!
