Our Best Friend QAL story, so far

I am so excited to Join Angel of Halo Inspirations to make our Best Friends Quilt Along quilt. I cannot say that sentence enough! We are sewing half of the blocks each and then combining them to make the quilt! I love the quilting bee style, over the miles way we are doing our quilt and so are many of the people participating in the quilt along. If my longarm is fixed in time, I hope to have it quilted by the end of the Quilt along and submit a finished quilt photo to the Fat Quarter Shop’s blog hop! Finger’s crossed that the longarm will be ready for pick up soon.

I met Angel through my podcast. She sponsored a Podcast episode with her Quilt Shop’s Alpaca mat. It is a pressing mat that functions like a traditional wool mat. HOWEVER, it doesn’t smell like a wool mat does and has less allergens given off from the mat when using it. I love mine! No sneezing, wheezing or itchy skin!

Our online friendship has grown over the past year. I try to watch her FB lives , YouTube videos and support her work. I asked her to help me with the BookShelf quilt along last summer because I couldn’t do the educational piece due to a heavy pandemic work schedule with my day job. She did a wonderful job sharing with everyone how to make this quilt. It was so much fun to do our pandemic themed quilts together. I love working with her and chatting. We have lots of things in common and a friendship has been born out of our online contacts. One day we will meet in person when it is safe to do so since I had to cancel my last road trip and a visit to Angel was planned then.

I have started sewing for the Best Friends Quilt along. All the details for the QAL, fabrics, patterns, and what you will need is here on Fat Quarter Shop’s blog. I sent Angel the picture of my first block and she was so supportive of my start. However, with her eagle eye, she said she loved my alternate coloring of the strips. WHAT? I reversed the color strips with the white strips. Try again. I made another mistake of keeping the center square white vs a color. BUT I am keeping those blocks because then I can put a little applique in it or embroidery that will personalize the quilt as our 2021 qal across the miles. Good thing for friends, right? She is going to get a preview of all of my blocks and the layout when I combine all of our little blocks together!

I am so thankful for the internet especially right now during the pandemic. I am able to stay connected with all of my friends and family. I am able to do online Quilting Bee’s, attend online quilt shows and make friends from across the miles.
