Saturday Morning Coffee

Another work week in the books. It was particularly awful. I am ok and job goes on. Workplace violence in a health care setting continues to be an issue that grows each year. I am lucky that it isn’t at an emergency level daily but I have been pondering this over the last few days.

Here are a few stats for you because this is something that I feel needs to be addressed as a nurse and in the settings we work in. I pulled these stats from a NHU study last year:

  • Eight in 10 nurses (81.6 percent) have experienced at least one type of workplace violence within the past year.
  • Nearly half of nurses (45.5 percent) reported an increase in workplace violence on their unit in the previous year. In contrast, only 3.8 percent of nurses reported that workplace violence has decreased on their unit in the previous year.
  • Nurses experience multiple types of workplace violence on a daily basis, ranging from physical abuse to verbal threats. The three most common types of violence reported were being verbally threatened (67.8 percent), physically threatened (38.7 percent), and being pinched or scratched (37.3 percent).

I hope to figure out a way to champion this cause when I retire and have more time and energy to devote to it. Workplace violence for nurses is a daily thing no matter what setting you are in. It is often minimized. It is not OK and is something that the public needs to understand and look at ways to help the nurses that you come into contact with.

Another thing I want to start spending time on it cold cases. My local State police post has opened a new cold case department. I feel very drawn to research and do what I can to help solve 3 cases of women who have been murdered in my community and the perpetrator has never been brought to justice. I don’t know how I am going to do this but I want to help figure this out. The more and more I watch Cold case files as well as shows where these murders are solved come from tips from amateur web sleuths and DNA. It can be done it just take time and resources from law enforcement as well as some dedicated people who have not forgotten about the victims.

I have been continuing to crochet and this long 3 day weekend I plan to work on some quilting, sewing and long arming. I want to publish a podcast and I have been thinking a lot about how I want my blog and social media to look. I may be talking a lot more about other things that captivate my interests and causes that I think are important to talk about. I hope that will make the content more meaningful and engaging.

my slouchy plant pot cover.
