Saturday Morning Coffee

Another week of smoke filled skies! I sure hope we can get rain this weekend to water the plants, wash the sky from the smoke and alleviate the fire risk. It has been eerie to have a sunny day and then the sky go dark with the smoke. I checked the weather radar and there were no clouds in the area.

I have been able to get some things done like walk on a trail one day at lunch, and workout this week. It felt good! The new inhaler I am using is working because I am starting to tolerate more activity.

While I was taking my little walk at lunch earlier this week, I was thinking about summer. About what I wanted to do with my time. It is so easy to just go through the motions of life and then you realize summer is over. It is such a short season here. Truly 90 days and then the fall is here.

I have really become quite bored and weary of thinking about all the rehab from Long Covid I am/was doing every waking moment. I want to switch mindset, change gears, and change my focus. As I was thinking, I was remembering what I used to do in the summers as kid that made it so much fun. I would be outside, lay in a hammock to read as part of the summer reading program at the library and watch the clouds. I would ride my bike. I would make lots of different crafts. I did a lot of visiting friends and family vacations.

I read The Empty Nest Chronicles blog and decided I should have a theme for the summer. It was funny that we all were thinking about what we wanted to do with our time. I am familiar with 100-day projects as I have done them before and they are planning a themed project for the summer. I like the idea of a theme, like the library still does for the summer reading program. I got my Madolin out the other day when my son was home and played it which inspired me to try to play again. It has been many years.

I would like to practice music daily for fun like when I was a kid. Just 10 min a day playing easy tunes, scales and try to find my chord book. Maybe by the end of the summer I can play a tune!

The other practice I have been incorporating is meditation. I want to spend 15 min a day. As the kid who would lay on the hammock watching the clouds, I found meditation helpful. I think this is something I have done most of my life instinctively but with my Headspace app I have found a renewed interest and enjoyment in meditation.

Lastly, as you need a three-point theme, is making. I will be doing a bit of long arming and piecing. I have cross stitching planned. I even have my Elementary wrap I want to get out. But see that is the point, as a child I spent the summer making. Not just one thing but many. I want to try my hand at many ideas. I have some acrylic paints and water colors. I have loads of embroidery panels and a shashiko panel to stitch. I have a Cricut and lots of things I could make. I am sooooo excited that our Hobby Lobby is being rebuilt!! It was leveled last year in our F3 tornado that ripped through town and my neighborhood.

As I revisit my inner 10 year old, I decided to have a theme that honored that summer of 1976. Music, meditation and making. It has a nice ring to it. And starting today is the perfect time because yesterday was the last day of school. I was driving home for my lunch break, and I was caught up in the sea of school buses that were leaving the high school that is located next to my office. Kids were walking to the downtown area in a tradition of getting ice cream and hanging out. The excitement was in the air, I couldn’t help but sing Alice Cooper’s song School’s out for Summer!

So today I am kicking off my theme for summer or 100-day project of spending 15 min in the theme!

  1. Good ideas! In July I feel like summer will last forever. Then August comes and speeds by! I do need to savour these summer days.

  2. I have to confess that summer is my least favorite time of year. I think it’s not as precious to us in the southwest where the heat starts early and can linger for months. And I work at a University that is in session all summer so it’s really not much of a change in routine. I go see my Mom once a month, who fortunately lives at the beach, but the drive is even longer drive due to all the extra traffic and getting around town and getting easy parking is a struggle. I think you know something about tourist/visitor traffic! So picking a theme intrigues me as a way to lift the summer blues! Such a great idea. I will have to give that some serious thought as I work in several long weekends of much needed time off. And dream of Fall-LOL!
