Saturday Morning Coffee

It’s my turn to have the cold that is going around and around. I have a stuffy head and feel a little achy. I am not up for much this weekend, but I hope to be able to do a little sewing and making. It snowed a bit overnight and continues to snow so it will be a weekend inside. I was so nice earlier this week we talked about raking the yard up, unheard of in March! However, that had been postponed until true spring.

I have been doing some quilting both long arming and piecing. But I have been a little bored with it. I have seen what is called slow stitching surfacing on my Facebook feed, and I have been researching it for a couple of months. I love this YouTube channel and you can see what it is all about. It’s really fabric collage and you can embellish your pieces with stitching, embroidery or trims. It is really an anything goes type of thing. I love that it is upcycling old bits of what you may have on hand or see in your travels. I decided to start this week, finally.

I love this whole project the meditation scrolls and the rice bag that is shown. I am starting out with the scrolls. I am basting my bits of fabric to a muslin strip right now and then I will go back and add the embellishments. It is really a meditation to make these, and mindfulness is a practice that I engage in to keep myself in the moment to cope with this mad world. I love some of the long videos to watch K3n chat and stitch , like a coffee or tea with a friend while you stitch. Here is my progress so far:

I am loving hand stitching right now, including cross stitch, but I won’t be giving up my sewing machine or long arm, lol.

I love slow stitching because it combines my love for collage making with textiles. I love paper art collages, but I don’t want to invest in all the needed things when I have a fabric stash. I don’t want to invest in more supplies likes paint, ink, brushes, art paper etc. It’s expensive and I want to get rid of clutter.

I am excited to make my scroll! My mom found some wooden bobbins so I will take one and I found small wooden spools to wind the scrolls on. I want to keep my eye open for larger second hand spools that are really big like 5 inches. I think you can buy them on Amazon if all else fails.

Have a great weekend! I am all snuggled in to make some slow stitching stuff!

  1. I’m sorry to hear you got that cold! It’s a good time for your slow stitching project. I do something a little similar making gift tags. I start with a flower, animal, or heart shape cut from an old quilt (a ‘cutter’ quilt I purchased years ago that just keeps giving!), pinking shear the edges, and add bits of button, lace, embroidery, etc. and then attach to a paper gift tag. Always looks cute on my default Kraft paper gift bag ties with ribbon. Several people have told me they keep the tags long after the gift was used. But I like the scroll idea! Goodness knows, we have plenty of scraps, bits and pieces to add to these projects. We will feel more Spring-ish after the time change this weekend so hang on! Lots for you to look forward to!
