Saturday Morning Coffee

What a week. We had a historic ice storm and had no power from Saturday night until Wednesday then it was spotty with rolling brown outs for hours and hours, until last night, it stayed on.

I had everything I needed while the power was out. Gas stove , food until the fridge got too warm, freezer food was salvaged by putting in a cooler outside, and water. But it got very cold outside at night and by Monday night the house has dropped to 50 degrees with it rapidly dripping with an outdoor remote to drop to 10. We went to family’s house who had a generator.

This was a widespread storm that was the entire tip of the mitt of Michigan. Hundreds of thousands without power. It was much like the the tornado a couple of years ago where neighbors were checking neighbors. It was a shelter in place for days. The damages they are saying are equivalent to big hurricanes. I hear people survived with wood stoves, camp cookers, many quilts on the bed , and whatever it took. The national guard is here as well as line workers, tree removal people that are from all over the US and Canada. I know people have died but so far no one I know.

We had a ton of tree damage , but our house has minimal damage and our vehicles no damage. We live in town and have limited cell phone. No internet so work has not been happening for me. I will have to use a week of vacation time to cover it.

It warmed up after being so cold. The ice and snow has melted, and we have seen the sun which helped boost our spirits.

Overall, when I couldn’t do anything because of the weather I cross stitched and crocheted until my hands were too cold. Then after when we came back home and I had power I quilted with limited cell I had limited information. I needed to focus on something good.

Now that the tree limbs are not frozen to the ground , we have started moving them off the property. It’s gonna be a job but with a little help from our friends it shouldn’t be impossible to do.

I posted lots of ice storm pics on fb and ig. I am on my phone today so I just want to post a little quilt eye candy. And know the podcast won’t be done until we have internet .

paper pieced block for next months qal

I am lucky , our family and friends may not get power for a month. They have a generator but it’s expensive to run. My husband is working and I will be working next week if I have to travel to another office.

I am blessed but I will admit I don’t ever want to go thru that again. We are going to invest in some kind of generator even a small one to start. I am good thru the crisis and afterwards is when it alllll hits me. I am ok and when I get my routine back I will feel even better. I almost had to get my treadle going!

  1. I’m so glad you got your power back. Yes, a generator sounds like a good thing to have.
it’s so sad to lose trees. We had a big September snow a few years ago and had some big branches come down. One branch looked like it could be saved. Hubby screwed a metal plate underneath and we wrapped it in duct tape. It leafed out nicely the next spring, but then 2 years later, during a windstorm, it snapped right off. Oh well – we tried.
Your quilting on that appliqué quilt is really pretty! I look forward to seeing it when it’s done

    • It has been a wild week but today the Internet seems to be working , that means I can go to work tomorrow. We got the limbs cleaned up and ready for the city to haul them away. I have a day to get a few little things done , get groceries and do laundry. The routine feels like it’s coming back after a week of being so off!

the loss of the trees is very sad as some were very old. However , I will be able to move forward . The only good thing is more light will be shining down on the garden and yard spaces.
